La expedición a la Barrera de Hielos Filtchner
An English translation of the text in the above site.
Graciously provided by William Tuttle.

The expedition to Barrier Filtchner the Ice, from Base Belgrano to the Creek Garden, is detailed, by having been that develops east work in charge of the same one. - It participates in same the all integral personnel of the base without exception, since all had to fulfill operative tasks in the land or of logistical support in the base, besides to constitute rescue teams, for the assumption case that the patrols that was in the land had some disadvantage that required the use of those equipment. - Luckily there was no necessity of this. - The dowry of the base was made up of the following personnel:

In addition this route would serve to continue the faltantes works through the Lassiter coast and its continuation with the Barrier of Larsen. 2, MISSION: The patrol will recognize a route from Base of General Army Belgano I (Latitude 77° 52 ' 28 ' ' - Length 38° 59 '), to end Adams (Latitude 75° - Length 61° 30 ') in the Lassiter coast of the Antarctica Peninsula, through Barrier Filtchner the Ice. - to CONCEPT OF the OPERATION: The operation will consist of a route with Sno-Cat tractors, (supported of being necessary by sleighs thrown by polar dogs) and will include the following phases: Phase 1: (from the 28 feb/66) From General Base Belgrano to the edge This of Isla Berkner, being based on the previous recognitions. - Phase 2: From the edge This of Isla Berkner to the wild West of the same one in the course that is determined in the land and on the letter. - Phase 3: From the wild West of Isla Berkner to installing a fuel tank and food to about 700 km from Base Belgrano I and I return. Phase 4: Spent the night polar, to reinitiate the activities in the land as of the month of October. Training of polar dogs and test of Sno-Cat tractors. - Phase 5: From Base Belgrano I to Creek Garden, previous passage by the deposit installed before the polar night. -

Single I am going to detail the corresponding thing to mobility means - Three vehicles sno-cat model 743-A - Two sleighs Nansen type to 7 dogs each one. 4, COMMANDO AND COMMUNICATIONS: Commando: during the march in the vehicle N° 1 (Lauquén Dam). Communications: All the communications to the outside will be made through the Power station of radio of General Base Belgrano. - Fdo. INSIPID OSCAR R Tte. 1º Head Base Gral Belgrano DEVELOPMENT Phase 1 (from Base Belgrano I, to the edge This of Isla Berkner) FEBRUARY This phase is fulfilled between the 28 of February of 1966 and the 9 of April of the same year in which it is arrived at the base Belgrano I. 28. Good day, is able to arrive at km 123. - MARCH 01. Good day. Contact with the outstanding patrol to the search is taken from the Cessna airplane, that it had had to land in a zone of cracks (campaign 1965), due to the impossibility to continue in regard to an unexpected weather, of which they are originated rather quickly in this zone of the Antártida. - We found to the personnel in good state and trying to remove a Sno-cat from a crack, helping them in the attempt. Finally this airplane was located by our patrol in charge of Lieutenant Edgardo Piuzzi, with which it occurs by finalized the task. This airplane that presented/displayed some failures was retired of the zone by a patrol of the dowry of year 1967 in charge of the Greater Ignacio Carro. -

02. Good day. March with course 270° magnetic, from km 123

03. Bad day. March but is due to stop by flaw in a differential. - To work below cero with temperatures of several degrees, causes that the task of the mechanics is really very sacrificed. In many opportunities one is due to work without gloves and " the irons " stick in the hands producing burns. The Sergeant First Towers permanently had the inchadas hands because of this.

-04, Regular day (little visibility) is arrived at km 108 after passing a crack of about 4 meters and one of 1 meter wide. - 05.Día to regulate. A recognition in cordada becomes of three men. The land appears very bad with zones of pressure to the front and the south; to the north is the " Great Crack ". - 06. Regular day. One returns to km 123 not to find an ascent to Is Berkner in this direction viable. - 07. Very good day. 123.500 km are crossed towards the south, and the west is stopped to 5Km on new route to Sobral Base. - Vehicle fallen in a crack During this passage we underwent two caidas ones of Sno-cat in cracks, that thanks to that such they marched encordados (Prudent of nylon of 5cm of wide by 50 meters in length), does not lose any personal vehicle nor. - One does not work permanently with the encordados vehicles, otherwise the marches would become very slow. In addition it is important to not only observe the land in the direction of movement but of the flanks, to see any indication that can make be conceited that it is danger areas; such as depressions, differences of color in the snow, some hole etc. - On the other hand it is acquired a species of intuition, that gives result. In some opportunities it is perceived like " that the zone is not reliable " and it resorts to the cordadas ones. During the campaign of year 1966 we fell 14 times in cracks that unfailingly we marked with a penknife in the steering wheel of the vehicle it command, (Lauquen Dam) but in all the cases without having to be sorry nothing else that the scare and without losing a single vehicle. - Years later (1972) I found out that this vehicle that was to us so useful, had disappeared in a crack of that they are in the North part of the call " Great Crack " and also Sergeant First Kurtzman had disappeared a " good Antarctic ", with who I worked in the zone of Base Hope in 1963. This happened the 8/02/72. In the fall of the photo, when trying to remove the vehicle, the door was opened that it gave to the crack and a binocular eyeglass and some tools fell to us that were underneath the front seat. As 40 meters of depth had had left about, on a snow bridge, we could rescue lowering them with a escalamiento cord, using technical of mountain. The ascent was not problem since the traction made a Sno-cat. -

08. Very good day. 113.200 km are crossed and it rises Isla Berkner. Fase2 (from the edge This a the wild West of Isla Berkner) 09. Very good day. Stop is made to verify the position of the edge This of the island Berkner. - 10. Very good day. The trigonometrical position is verified. A nivotrigonométrica signal is placed. - 11. Very good day 100 km are crossed on the island. - 12. Good day 58 km are crossed and the time is stopped when desmejorar. - 13. Bad, not day march. - 14. Bad, not day march. - 15. Bad, not day march. - 16. Bad, not day march. - 17. Regular day, the sleighs covered by the weather, not are opened march. - 18. Good day, 76 km are crossed and the Berkner island is exceeded. - Phase 3 (From the wild West of Isla Berkner to the deposit place). 19. Good day, 84 are crossed Kms. 20. Bad day. It is arrived at km 765 from Base Belgrano. One settles a fuel tank and food. The return to Belgrano by tiemo does not begin badly. - In the deposit aronafta is left, additive, drawers of food for two men for 30 days, rations for the polar dogs, cans of 20 liters of kerosene, cans of 10 liters of alcohol to burn. The zone with canes is laid out properly colihues of about 3.5 meters and red and blue banderoles. - The return is made previously using the corresponding contrarrumbos and march going through the lazy banderoles between 5 and 10 km one of another one. - The land was always laid out and an inventory of the courses took, that was consulted permanently. - In this respect it is necessary to clarify, that difference between which existed marked the precision compass, with which the general course removed and what it marked the compass of the vehicle. In order to solve this, the general course with the compass removed on the tripod, after making level it properly. One marked to the direction with three separated banderoles about 10 meters one of another one. Next one came in the direction of those banderoles and from about 150 meters, with the Sno-cat it command, to 1800 revolutions (normal speed of the vehicle) saw that course marked the compass of the vehicle. For some reason the course varied about 10 degrees. In addition it was necessary to make corrections if the windshield heating engineer were placed. All this had to be considered not to have heavy mistakes. - In the beginning he was quite troublesome but soon the practice made everything easier. - For the return we took 19 days. It seemed that everything had to be faster since was known land, but the temperature lowered and it stayed below cero below the 30°C and it was arrived below cero until 45°C. Parelamente were days with whitening and in addition we had problems with the oil pressure of a vehicle. The one of the vehicle we solved taking it it of drag, for which there was to remove the caterpillars to him, to unite the pontoons to him and thus we moved sliding it it by the snow. The march therefore became slower. It is in this opportunity when we saw the fascinating " austral auroras for the first time ". It was during a march between km 275 and km 120 in the direction of Belgrano base, in a very well-known zone, that we called " the Pampas to him of Filtchner " and which we knew beforehand was healthy, as long as we maintained the course. We left with light but night was done to us and we continued marching. Here already the days are quite short (5/6 hours). With low temperatures one takes around two hours in listing a vehicle for the march. It is necessary to warm up the motor, both differentials and the box of speed and transference. If the motor is warmed up (8 cylinders in V) and not it makes for example with the differentials, when trying put it in movement is safe that these will be broken, since is " the planetary " call in an ice block. For that reason it is necessary as much time to list the vehicles. Warming up sno-cat On known land as it is this case, the vehicle commando came out not well was ready and the rest followed the track to him. We had done three hours of march in night, when we began to see reflections in front of ours sno-cat, that I thought were the lights of sno-cat that came behind. It called the attention to me that our companions had walked so fast and we stopped. Our surprise was capital, since the lights of the " austral auroras " were not lights of vehicles but. They appeared of different type and colors, were really a wonder and a privilege to be able to observe them in that zone-Final we arrived at Belgrano base. I confess that about some moment I thought about that we could have problems with the other two sno-cat, which was not to discard, still with very good mechanics like ours. But the confidence appeared again knowing that we took to two sleighs Nansen type and 14 polar dogs. In my concept a vehicle can fail in this land, but the polar dogs nó.

POLAR NIGHT the " polar night ", that is to say, with absolute lack of solar light, lasts for the latitude of Base Belgrano, about four months. As well as already in the month of April one begins to notice the solar lack of light, in the month of August begins to appear again. As counterpart during the summer four months are also had about in which the Sun is not put. - In the South Pole (90° of latitude) six months occur where it sees the Sun and six months in which it does not appear. During the " polar night " they are made with all the dowry of the base, the tasks that have not been able to complete and that are many. - There is personnel who has tasks that we can call fixed or permanent for example: * The cooks, must prepare the daily meals (breakfast, lunches, merienda and have supper), in addition to refrigerios, specially to mid-morning, since except in the residence, the rest of the places (food dumps, materials several, combustible, veterinary, tunnel of the polar dogs etc.), are below cero to a stable temperature of 20°C. In some opportunities, in summer, it is less cold outdoors than within the tunnels of the base - * the radio operators, must take care of permanently the radios and every two hours, envíaban the weather datas to the power station, that in this opportunity was Base de Orcadas. - In addition they install and they maintain the radios vehiculares and they took care of the electrical system of the base - * the meteorologistas, make measurements of the different apparatuses that are in the outside. For this they must leave outside the base, by means of stairs that it gives to a " exit of emergency ", calls in the Antarctica slang " bulwarks " and to make the measurements, illuminating itself with a lantern, since it is total night * Every fifteen days are made measurements of the lines of " níveles " (canes colihue with measures in centimeters to verify the snow accumulation) which they are in the outside to about 500 meters of the base, and with a prefixed magnetic course. For this task three are used or four men and a reflector removes to the surface; the course that has removed is for orienting itself in case that a fault of the motors of the usina leaves the reflector without light and must become to the base following the course pure compass - * the mechanics (two) take care of the usina in permanent form. The motors worked with diesel oil and they fed themselves with pilow of 20,000 liters that is in the outside. In several opportunities it was necessary to leave with a heating engineer to melt the fuel, that had been put too thick and it did not lower to the tanks of the motors.

The rest of the mechanics must take care of the patrol vehicles (six), that are reviewed one by one and to which sometimes is necessary to repair the motor to them, in addition to everything what requires the maintenance of these vehículos.Los vehicles are in the outside, separated about 20 or more meters of others to avoid the snow accumulation as far as possible. Each as much it is necessary to open the incline of the base that corresponds to the factory, and after installing the reflector, it is necessary to palear snow two or three hours, to leave entrada.Se expeditious it removes the vehicle that was in adjustment and previous heating (two hours), introduces another one to the repaired factory for. - In addition to the Sno-cat, Caterpillar is necessary to consider to two (D4 and D6) that was dowry of the base. - * The polar dogs require a daily attention as far as their feeding and cleaning of the sector where they are. These were 14, and the task was responsibility of the doctor (there was no veterinarian) and another personnel in turn * We must add that daily and in turn, (including the Head of Base) a man made permanent guard during the 24 hours (he had 8 hours of rest), taking care of heating engineers, doing cleaning, serving the food who prepared the cooks and " doing water " by means of the method of hechar ice or snow to the de-icer, to pump it to the tank later. That day also took advantage of to wash the clothes. - One of the dangers in the base is the fire possibility, thus it is necessary to be a special careful with the heating engineers who worked with THR (mixture of diesel oil and kerosene) Saturdays to the morning we tried to go to the old tunnels of other previous dowries and to recover some material that was to us useful. Thus we found drums of 50 liters of white kerosene, that had taken General Pujato when it founded the base 15 years before. To the tunnels it was necessary to enter crawling and by the tied doubts a cord - * the topographers fit the data of the measurements that have become and the new routes are prepared. The cartography is corrected or rather the data of the measurements turn upside down to him that have become, since before there was antecedentes.Mantenimiento of no theodolites etc. - * Another one of the tasks for the polar night is the preparation of all the inventories (arsenals, Intendance, health, veterinary medicine, transports etc.) to be presented/displayed to the relief of the base - * In addition they were prepared and they reviewed in detail, the drawers with food for personnel (30 days for two men), the carps, that had all winds and stakes, carps of emergency, medicine kits etc. We knew that any element that we forgot, we could not go it to buy in the business of the corner. - If we take care of this, we will see that it is left very little people for general tasks, such as preparation of the tunnels of the food, clothes and materials etc. Made these landmarks as much as so that one does not think that in the " polar night " it is lived sleeping, step to relate what we can call the second part of this expedition. -

Phase 4 (spent the night, test of tractors and training of polar dogs polar) After to have proven the vehicles in the direction of the English base Shackleton that is inactivates (33 km to the east) and of to have made walk as much to our polar dogs, that were with all their characteristic energy, that they won to him in the route to the Sno-cat, I considered that we were ready to begin the following phase. - Phase 5 (From the Belgrano base to Creek Garden). We initiated exit for the final stage, the 16/10/66 to the 2250 horas.Cruzamos the " Great Crack, that was enough signs, since the temperature was low and was snow accumulation produced during the polar night. Later the Sun would be in charge to relax the bridges in the cracks. - Exit of the " Great Crack " We walked 245 km and we stopped to rest. Soon we continued until Scientific Base Outpost of the Sobral.El Army Saravia step, had had some movement in its surface and we underwent two falls of Sno-cat, but without mayores consequences. Aerial Vista of Sector Great Crack Base Sobral De Sobral put course to Isla Berkner by the route which already we knew and that was laid out each 2Km.Ya in the edge This of the island, from the nivotrigonométrica signal that we had placed during the Phase 2, was reinitiated the march the 23/10/66 to the 1130 hours and they were begun to make measurements RAMSSON each 50 km, data that the glaciólogos use for their studies of hielos.Paralelamente gathered samples of snow for the CNEA (National Commission of Atomic Energy). - We arrived at the wild West of Isla Berkner without problems, having noticed that an important snow precipitation were during the polar night, since the banderoles were women who hides herself with mantel almost. - For this section of 247 km we used 33 hours. To get late on Beckner island

In the photos the slope of the island by the position of the vehicles can be noticed. - Of this point we initiated the route towards the deposit which we had installed before the polar night, the 26/10/66, being the 1130 hours and one arrived at the deposit the 27/10/66 to the 1700 hours, after 16 hours of march and to have crossed 141 km to 9.2 km of promedio.Del deposit we used 3,400 liters of aviation fuel which we had left with which we completed to 11,700 liters, the total of the column of vehicles To 45 km of this place, we were with a fault of the land of about 150 meters wide and wild broken of the order of the 15 meters, whose bed presented/displayed zones of pressure and crack-For saving this obstacle 10 km are backed down and soon with course 180° walks 20Km. completes the day after making 104 km and we happened to rest in 77°00? of latitude and 55° 45? of length. - The land appeared very firm, is to say without cracks or with cracks very covered and consistent bridges. - To 49 km of this point we return to find another fault similar to the previous one but of about 50 meters wide. We back down 11K. and soon with magnetic course 200° we cross 25 km We stopped to 107 km in 76°45? of latitude and 56°55? of length-To 67 km of this place we see that the course took to us closely together of the coast thus we back down 18 km with course 200° and soon we took 255° and advanced with this course to move away to us of the coast definitively that always is more dangerous. Soon we advanced 50Km with course 295°, 24 km with course 320° and 45.7 km with 333°. - It is to say doing a species of arc that took towards the objetivo.Recorremos 70 km to us and we stopped in 75°50? of latitude and 61°00?de length. - From this point continente.Con was not even observed course 330° marched 30 km and happened through two depressions of about 60 meters that without a doubt were cracks filled up by the fallen snow. When doing 80 km we more began to see hills of mountainous spurs of the continent. With the good visibility that then we had, we pointed the vehicle it command (Lauquen Dam) towards which seemed to be Creek Garden and to 149.7 km we stop the march to consider that we were within the creek, since the peninsula was seen Bowman, the end Adams and the continent, that appeared broken. In this place we make camping and to the other day we marched with sleighs Nansen type, thrown by polar dogs, because the proximity of the continent estimates the presence of cracks. - We marched with course 333° and to 7.6 km we found a channel that separates the barrier of Filtchner of continent the Bowman.El peninsula presents/displays almost all its broken edges and single possible inclines of ascent are observed in some places.

Arriving with sno-cat at peninsula Antarctica It was recognized in the direction of an ascent incline, with course 280° from the nivotrigonométrica signal, but to 11.7 km. was a zone of cracks that ran in all directions, caused this by the shock of the barrier against elcontinente.-El channel that the peninsula separates Bowman of the barrier of Filtchner, does not allow to continue towards the North La only possibility of displacement towards the zone of the Matienzo bases and Esperanza is to raise the continent and soon to see the feasibility march by the coastal barriers the sea Weddell.-La astronomical Creek position measured Garden, gave to the following resultado:Latitud 75°03?49? and length 61°25?15??.Los data of this measurement were passed through radio, channel Belgrano Base, to the Military Geographic Institute, that it corroborated that the result was correct. Measuring with telemetro the channel between Filtchner barrier and peninsula Bowman Final Grafico of the route We left a deposit of 4 drawers of food that is calculated for two men during 30 days. In addition 60 liters to kerosene and 10 liters of alcohol. - The deposit with banderoles was indicated and the drawers were placed on empty fuel drums. - Fulfilled this, the return was without problems and the 28/11/66 we were in our Belgrano base. - This had to that when happening the data to the cartography, gave to a position outside the creek Garden us, about 20 km to the East. As we had the certainty that we were within the creek, because we saw it, as they show the photos to it, we resorted to that will to leave all doubt, since we used topographic letters of our country, of the USA and also Inglesas.-Estos results allowed to correct the existing cartography. This route took place for the first time in the history of the Antártida. Barrier of Filtchner that in some letters appears with the name of Ronne (American aviator that flew over the same one), never had been crossed in terrestrial form, of This a the West. - For that reason taking advantage of the characteristics these present technologies, after 32 years, I allow myself to write these data in tribute to those who accompanied to me in that opportunity. Some no longer are present, will walk patrolling in other latitudes of the spirit and we will always remember them. - They made and different types from elements adapted so that outside possible to fulfill the objectives that had paid attention and to opportune time, for which sometimes it left up to 52 hours in continued form, to take advantage of the good time, that sometimes he is little. Very low temperatures were supported (less of 40°C) than are characteristic of this latitude and zones were explored that stop to arrive at the same ones was necessary to cross by fields of quite dangerous cracks. - I am not going to enter details that are crowded in my mind and that fills me of satisfaction, when remembering some circumstances that were called on to us to live. But I have a imperecedero memory of all the members of the dowry of General Base Belgrano I of year 1966. - Pinguino Right Final Emperor the day that we embarked in the General ALTAR Icebreakers San Martín, to return, appeared this beautiful pinguino emperor, as a dismissed. Never we had seen one and we were very been thankful, by its visit. The ping5uinera is to 200km to the West of Belgrano and the height of Isla Berkner. This is the last photo that I took, when the General ALTAR Icebreakers San Martín already moved away of Barrier Filtchner the Ice. - Members of Base Belgrano, 25 of May of 1966 The General base Belgrano I when being divided themselves barrier Filtchner the ice, approximately in the zone of the call Great crack and coming off a great iceberg about 100 km in length, along with the iceberg to left " to sail ". The journalistic news of the event: WHITE BAHIA (Telam) the registered most spectacular episode in summer the Antarctica campaign that has culminated on the part of the Armed Forces and Argentine scientific organisms has been the loss, to the drift on a tempano of extraordinary proportions, of the army base " Belgrano I".Todo is had due to the monumental fractures of barrier Filtchner the ice in three great icebergs that are sailing to the drift. This information provided " to the New Province ", that adds, the one to it that serves to support to the Belgrano base calculates that km.de comprises of a loosening of about 100 wide. some in the depths of the sea of Weddel Was the first installation of country. After presenting/displaying indicated services in international the geophysical year (1957-1958), the Belgrano laboratory settled in her (LABEL), that had to be transferred when " inactivating it " to the base Belgrano 2. Also it served as base a remembered flight it command already by the Gral. Pujato, until 87º lat. The south and to the terrestrial expedition to the South Pole that it headed in 1965 colonel Leal. Nota:Faltaria to add that the first terrestrial expedition by barrier lent a determined support Filtchner the ice That Belgrano I was going to come off itself

Nota:Faltaria to add that the first terrestrial expedition by barrier lent a determined support Filtchner the ice That Belgrano I was going to come off itself the Filtchner barrier was a certainty. This is the reason for which at the present time there is two Bases Belgrano more. Belgrano III, is on the Berkner island in 77°54´ and 45°59´, was founded the 30 of January of 1980. Belgrano II, is in 77°51´y 34°33, was based the 5 of February 1979. This demonstrates clear to the will of our country to continue with the Antarctic tasks and to maintain personnel in permanent form. Belgrano II, can be observed in the photographies. It is constructed on rocky projections called Nunataks Bertrab and one is by such discovered reason for ice.
